I remember as a little girl my MaMa Auten had a parakeet - actually several parakeets and they were always blue. The would sing and play and she had this great old birdcage and would like the bottom with newspaper, give it fresh water, etc. My Auntie Gwen had canaries and would love to care for them and feed them pepper grass she grew in her back garden. I was always intrigued by the shape of the cage and the little attention to details - the water trays and swings/perches, little doors, etc. My sister has a few decorative birdcages and when I was shopping with my girlfriend Edie in OB at my fave store 'Vingettes' I saw this adorable bird cage. We were there for the OB Chili Cook off and they had a street fair and just browsing and enjoying the day. My impulse was to get it; however, with my Simplification Project I resisted. mind. However, the next day was an incredible challenging day at work and to escape the chaos I would daydream about how I would decorate that little bird cage. So a quick dash back to OB and Vingettes made my bitter day sweet. For the 4th it was all decked out with flags and I hung a star and firecrackers on the perch. In Palm Springs last weekend I went to another fave 'The Alley' and bought some beautiful potpourri in sage greens and whites (Jasmine) and a concrete bird to nestle in.....I am loving it and the place I found for it. I even found the perfect stand at my other fave 'Ross' and it has little metal birds in leaves on the base. Can't wait for the holidays to dress this baby up!
