Sew Fun!
I think I have written before about the excellent sewing skills in my family - grandma's and aunties....and that certainly escaped my DNA.
About 20 years ago I won a White Brand Sewing Machine in a sales contest when I was working in Pharmaceutical Sales.....it was rarely used and when I did use it - it made for some unhappy experiences.....so I bit the bullet and bought this little gem.......it has a self threading needles and 26 different stitch types!!!
I am thrilled with it and it just hums along and is most happy to do whatever I program into it!!! Could it - can it....is it...just possible I too can be 'Sew Happy'?!
I have to be careful not to escape into areas of overwhelming sewing projects.....I struggle anyway with hobbies....they become more like work to me....like I have to finish it and can't leave it alone for a minute until it is done.....
This is my first little project after reading and following the instructions on my new little cutie. The embroidered costumed figures are off a tshirt I bought for Brody when he was 7 months old to wear around Halloween....I backed it with some cute candy corn fabric, made it into a decorative pillow and stitched a little yellow ribbon to hang it up with when the holidays come.
Brody and Dylan slept over last night and this a.m. while Dylan was at Bowling Team and Brody was outside working in the yard with Gramps I whipped it up. When Brody came in (and I changed his clothes as he was soaked - Thanks Gramps) I had it finished and we talked about all the costumes and he would point at the ones as I called them out; ghost, devil, skeleton, mummy, vampire, monster, black cat, pumpkin....if he knew the sound they made he would say it (Monster - RAHHHHH), Kitty (MEOW), etc. It was a lot of fun and he liked the Mummy the best (I think it is because he loves his Mommy and it sounded close).
Anyway - loved the project, loved the inspiration to make it, loved sharing it with Brody and you all!

Coolest Summer Ever!
I am lovin this cool San Diego Summer.....as in temperature - not events, altho the events have been fun too!
We have the windows open at night and snuggle under a comforter and the cool breezes just float in.....ahhhhhh.......good for insomnia too! We sit outside in the evenings and need a light jacket! Even the lifeguards are bundled up.
I do feel bad for my visiting friends and families that are spending major bank at the beach houses and not seeing the sun until 4 p.m., if at all.
I remember my summers in Phx, playing Jacks in 110 degrees, no ac in the car, frying an egg on the concrete, baking in the sun at Lake Roosevelt, swamp coolers and running in the sprinklers. This summer it is all about long pants and long sleeved tshirts and I have to admit - pretty sweet.
Soon I will be in Phx/Scotttsdale to spend a few days at my brothers and bake in the the 'dry heat' - until then will soak up this coolest summer ever!

Catching Up....
It has been a kkkkkkrrrrraaaaazzzzzzeeeee week since we got home from Seattle. Got in late Tuesday night and back to work on Wednesday and both Steve and I had incredibly tough days when we returned.
The epitome of the chaos was when I left to get the boys from school on Friday and once I got there I realized I did not have car seats in my car! (Taken out for Seattle, not reinstalled). Thank goodness Kristen was close by and picked them up, I treated to yogurt and she got us settled back in the house before she had to leave. Then around 5 pm as I looked out to see Brody had his hand in a jar of mud my boss called and wanted to go over my 2011 budget numbers - argh!
Steve got home and brought dinner for all of us - our hero!!! After we ate he took the boys out front to play while I ran around the house like a crazy person making beds, getting out pj's getting the boys bath ready, etc. Soon we had them all bathed and cuddled and stories read and into bed they went. I don't think Dylan moved once his head hit the pillow. Steve and I were soon to follow!
Saturday morning Kristen picked up Dylan for bowling and Brody hung out with us. As soon as they returned I dashed to pick up lunch as my cousin from AZ and her daughter and grand kids that are renting a beach house for a few weeks were coming over for a play date. We don't get to see them often and look forward to our annual summer visits. They got a bit turned around with directions and ran a bit late but arrived and we sat outside and enjoyed our lunch (and the fantastic Julian Apple Pie they brought). The kids played in the pool and the outdoor play sink, the fountain, the 'construction site of GiGi Internation Aiport', the play house and inside in the toy room and with the train table. By 2 all the little ones (and the big ones) were tired and headed out. Steve and I fought the good fight at Wal*Mart and Costco to get him ready for his business trip. We came back home and I finished all the laundry and took a nice long hot shower and when I got out Steve said our buddy from Jupiter, Florida was going to come by and see us. He and his family used to live here and we were and are Besties so we were so happy to see him. Steve did get to play golf with him earlier in the week so I was happy to have a few minutes to visit as well. We are planning to go see them in October and talked about boating to the Keys while we are there - at least in October it will be a bit cooler in Florida. After he left we had our dinner at 9 .m. and went to bed! It has been so cool at night we slept really really well. Today I got up at 7 and worked for 3 hours on our bills, my parents bills, the caregivers payroll, etc. Then I ironed for 2 ours and then cleaned out the coat closet (have a huge pile to donate) and my closet. I made a quirky observation....all my summer pjs are pink; all my winter pj's are blue....what does that mean in the universe of control and balance???? I need to find my Magic 8 Ball and find out. I got dressed and am heading out to do a few errands and watch my sweet boys while Kristen goes to see Al's new baby Campbell - he is a whopper weighing in at 9.5 lbs! We had a 'Sprinkle' for Alison a few weeks ago and so happy the baby is here safe and sound!!!

Seattle Day 6
All good things do come to an end and we were sad that this was our last day in Seattle. Steve was exhausted so he just wanted to hang around the house however Deb had some errands to do and I headed out to pal around with her. We decided to hit all the Thrift Stores (Thank you On Star Directions) on our way to our destination. That was really fun - I found a big set of Mr. Potato Head and some brand new Tonka books on cranes, bulldozers & dump trucks for the boys. I found a really old vintage ceramic Turkey for my collection and it was just fun milling in and out. Deb found some great blocks for her preschool and we saw all kinds of interesting items. I must comment that their Thrift stores are clean and organized! Since we had planned to go back to Amy's and ran out of time I was glad I was all packed up prior to leaving for our errands. I did ask Steve to bring a carry back for me as I just did not feel like getting on the flight with a Thrift Sore bag (stay classy, San Diego) We met up with Steve at '13 Coins' a fantastic restaurant right near the airport. Deb and I split the fantastic Calamari Steak and Steve had a Avocado and Bacon sandwich. We hated to say goodbye however our flight time was near and Deb dropped us at SeaTac and we left right on time, a very quick layover in Oakland and arrived in SD around 9:45. Adam was right there to pick us up when our luggage came and little Rocky Road was so happy to see us. So good to go; so good to come home.
Seattle Day 5
A, S, K, B, D & B all were on the early flight back to SD. Deb, Steve, Amy and I were in our clam digging gear and headed out. Low tide was at 5, however, due to some direction challenges, including meeting a guy at a gas station who laughed that we were going clamming but was kind enought to guide us to our spot (Big Bay) we had our shovels in the dirt about 7 a.m. At first, Steve and I had no idea what we were doing.....so I headed over to Amy to observe her clamming skills. Deb was pointing out good areas and fell in a sink hole....once we recovered from laughing we got serious (btw - we laughed with her, not at her)!!! After an hour we all had our limit (40 each per our licenses), please a few oysters, muscles and sand dollars! We headed back to Amy's and rinsed off our muddy shoes and clothes and then scrubbed the 160+ clams and took the best showers we ever had. Deb and I then took off to get the remaining ingredients for a clam bake (shrimp, crab, corn, red potatoes, leeks, etc). Toby and his family arrived about 5 and we had so much fun feasting on the clam bake yummies.
Seattle Day 4
Day 4 we woke up at the water park and fixed some breakfast treats in the hotel....yes, again my niece thought of everything and we all had fresh fruit and breakfast casserole to enjoy. We had to check out of our room at 11; however had use of the park for the day. Being a Sunday and knowing traffic would be especially bad we packed up the cars and while the guys enjoyed a bit more of the park us girls ran to the outlet malls (slim pickins as far as outlets go) however, Kristen and Shannon scored at Quicksilver and Gymboree. I settled for some 'mom jeans' and had some of the worst customer service ever....once we were back in the car headed back to the lodge I shared my experience and Kristen and Shannon too shared about the customer service - we came the to the following conclusion: We all thought people would be friendly and upbeat in Seattle because my niece is friendly and upbeat - however, in the service industry in Seattle they must be miserable due to the weather and their outlook on life - even my sister told off the shuttle driver!
So we regrouped at the lodge and had a wonderful picnic lunch - turkey sands, chips, apples and goodies. We posed for this family picture (can you tell we were at a water park - what a motely crew) and my group headed back to the Seattle Marriott. Yes, traffic was bbaaaadddd - worse than before. Luckily the boys napped and we suffered in silence as we finally got to the hotel. Dropped off K, B & boys and headed to Amy's to clean up and unload. After the second group got home and K, B & boys returned we had a bbq and enjoyed the outside. Everyone was so tired and the kids were leaving in the a.m. so they said their sad goodbyes to their cousins....it was so fun to all be together as aunts, uncle and cousins.....
Seattle Day 3
Day 3 in cool and grey Seattle was a big day for the little ones. Adam and Shannon drove the mini over to the Marriott and picked up Kristen, Brian and the boys and our niece Amy fixed a really nice lunch for everyone - 18 in all! After we enjoyed that and the boys enjoyed her fountain and green space behind her adorable patio, we loaded up the minis and 'had ourselves a convoy' through Olympia to Great Mound to the Great Wolf Water Park.
I have lived in CA for 30 years, a 10 year stint in LA and 20 in SD - I will never ever ever again talk about traffic woes in said cities, but I have witnessed and confirmed that the I/5 in Seattle has the worst traffic I have ever been in (including DC, NYC, LA, Chi-Town, Rome, London, Dublin, etc., etc., etc). There are just too many cars for the 3 lanes they have. What should have taken 1.5 hrs took almost 3 - a long time for little ones to be patient and wait. My poor driver husband could not go over 15 - 25 mph.....so when we saw the GREAT WOLF ahead of us we were happy to be sure. The Lodge includes s a 5 story indoor water park and you check in and get wristbands that allow you access to everything - like an all inclusive. Everything you buy and do is done with the swipe of a wristband, even entry to your room. However, when we checked in our rooms were not ready so we sorted out what we needed for access to the water park portion and just then some kid triggered the fire alarm and thousands of people came streaming out.....chaos level could not have been higher. I laugh as my sister said to me 'You are so quiet' - I think I was in shock/chaos/traffic overload. I deal with chaos all day at work but for some reason this overwhelmed me and true to my survival dealing nature I had to go to shutdown mode for a bit. Finally our rooms were ready, we unloaded and regrouped. The suite was fantastic, spacious, clean and decorated like a lodge, including 46 inch flat screens over the fireplaces :) We had 2 separate bedrooms and a huge family room and a kitchen, 2 bathrooms and the family room had a couch that made into a bed. So we suited up and headed for the water park where Dylan and Brody were little fishes. It was amazing to see how this place works with water play and rides from babies to adults. Steve, Amy, Deb and I went on the 'Howling Tornado' and it was fast and over the top - one ride was enough for me. I had fun playing with the boys and watching the cousins and all the other little ones and families. The downside to the set up is that it is over clorined and humid, which, it has to be to be so clean and safe but for those of us that are sensitive to that sort of thing it was a bit much. It was so so fun.
At 6 pm we had a pizza party in Deb's room which was just like our room and down the hall. Since is was close to her 60th birthday we had a little 'roast' to her. The kids and cousins all told funny stories and I had crafted '60 Things about 60 Year old Deborah Sue' and we had some memories and laughs with that. Amy made a very yummy coconut sheet cake and we enjoyed the evening.

Seattle Day 2
Since A, K, S & I were staying at Amy's we had to take her 1983 rusted out truck 'Big Blue' from her house to the Marriott where K, B, D, & B were staying. Easier said than done - Steve was adjusting to the brakes and all 4 of us piled in for the daunting ride to the Marriott. I am sure the staff appreciated it when we found a parking place front and center for Big Blue! We all then took the shuttle back to Sea-Tac to our friends (not) at AVIS and low and behold our van was ready!!! By 11 we were on the tour, courtesy of Uncle A. He first took us to 'The Troll under the Bridge' and we really enjoyed that - funky, off beat and ultra Seattle. From there we headed to park in between Pikes Market and the Space Needle. We walked from the parking garage (gulp - 25.00/day) to the Market and it was super crowded but the boys got to see the 'Flying Fish' and Adam got a great video clip of it he promises to send me. We waded thru crowds to see the beautiful fish and seafood, the incredible flowers and the other trinkets the shops had to offer. We ate lunch and a great place overlooking the market and after us girls ordered we had 15 mins to shop and return - the guys stayed with the boys. We all split up in different directions....I was shopping for a reusable bag to carry my stuff to and fro work and some Christmas ornaments for each of us to remember our trip by. I lucked into a spot and found everything but the line was huge as they also specialized in Twilight TShirts (apparently the vampires are from the area - who knew?) and so after I waited very patiently in line I ran back to catch up with Kristen and Shannon and we returned to the restaurant right when our meals came - ta da! From there we walked to the Monorail and took that to the Space Needle. Again we planned 1 hr and all went and did our own thing. A & S went to the top, Steve and I both took work phone calls =( and walked around and K, B & Boys did the little rides and bouncy houses. We all met up for a family shot and then rode the monorail back to the car - bailed it out and headed to our nephews for dinner. We got a bit lost but he rescued us at a shopping strip and we made it to their place for some yummy Greek food and fun and laughter with all the 'kids' and grand kids. From there we did the drop at the hotel and back to Amy's for the night.

Our Seattle and Washington Family Vaca - Phase 1
We just returned from a family trip to Seattle and the surrounding areas and I am so behind in my bills, work, housework, unpacking, etc., but thought I would take a break for an update via installments on this trip.
I have to say I learned quite a bit on this trip.....I plan so well in advance to accomodate my family as best as I can - maybe to a fault sometimes, as I believe at times 'no good deed goes unpunished'.
Plan:
With coordinating work schedules and flights and credits and free tickets, it worked out that Steve and I flew up to Seattle a few hours earlier than the kids so I decided we would take the car seats for the boys and get the rental car, load in the car seats, drive to the hotel and get checked in and then return to the airport and pick them all up, drop off the boys and K & B at the Marriott and head to my nieces with A & S for the night. And, if we had some down time have a bite to eat. Sounds good right?
Actual:
Good old Southwest arrived right on time (they are the GREATEST airline) and we walked over to AVIS. I booked our van through Priceline.com and when I booked the flights I could only get them a few hours earlier than the car. I tried tirelessly to change the times on line and via the phone and received no help from Avis or Priceline and kept hearing 'just explain it when you arrive and they will help you'. Well that was a CROCK! The AVIS counter clerk could see our reservation however could not pull it up until midnight (it was about 8 p.m.) so we asked for manager help and he said the same, then we saw 2 mini vans in their lot and asked/begged if we could have one of those and they said no, on hold for other clients. I went to every rental counter there to try to secure a van and none were available. They said only Priceline could make the change and Priceline told me if I made a change I would forfeit over $500.00 in charges. Ugh....so we had to call upon my niece to come down to the airport and pick us up with a slight nod from the manager of Avis to come back around 10:30 when the kids arrived and he should be able to release the van. So she picked us up, we got the hotel room and we did get to enjoy some time with our beautiful niece and headed back to the airport at 10:30. In which, Avis, said no way - not until after midnight would they release the van. UGH. So my niece took K and me and the boys to the hotel, Steve took A, S, & B via the hotel shuttle and we met up at the Marriott. Got the kids settled and then we went back to my nieces for the night.
Not the kind of start to our relaxing trip I had hoped for......we have traveled the world with fewer problems and I will never ever ever ever give AVIS or Priceline.com any more business.

Before and After Project
I have had to travel to Salt Lake City for years for business....I have my faves there - staying at Little America in the tower, sushi at an old church, the gift shop at Cracker Barrel and the best of the best: Gardner Village - an old Grist Mill turned restaurant and shopping mecca. They decorate over the top for all Holidays. I especially love their Halloween Theme - full size witches all over the village, flying on brooms, playing softball, stirring the boiling pot....and the elves at Christmas - so cute. I love all the shops and love to eat their fried green tomatoes....mmmmm...but not as good as my mom's.
So on a trip one year that was near Christmas it was all decked out in it's glory. At one of the stores they had a full size sideboard and all things snowman and red and green on it.....I think I heard the Hallelujah chorus when I saw it. For so long I have tried to find a nook or cranny at the house so I could incorporate that into my decor. I love Craig's list and would scour for hours and they were all so big and no way could I find a space for it. So a few weeks ago I came across this and scooped it up. I used the Behr primer and paint combo and gave it a once over and then took my handy sander to distress it out. I am really happy with the outcome and I can't believe I was able to cram yet another piece of furniture into this house!
Hint of OCD or Keenly in Touch with the Universe
Rocky and I are creatures of habit.....in the morning we have the same routine....I get up and get on my walking clothes, he stretches, I brush my teeth and comb my hair, he yawns, I get on my shoes and he scratches on the foot board of the bed....if I take one minute too long he starts to make this strange noise between a yap and a whine. I pick him up and we head downstairs....I get this leash on and grab a Kleenex - out the front door, take the plastic bag off the newspaper for 'collection' and off we go, yes - no need to say it - on the same walk every day. The same bush, the same tree, the same 'favorite collection spots'. Once in awhile we see someone out with their dog, and often see Coyotes and bunny's....but one thing that I have been in tune with is the amount of cars that pass me reflects on how my work day is going to be.....sound crazy - well you novices in the world of OCD or being in touch with the universe can doubt all you want. Some days cars are out early and drive very fast (this is not a good sign) some days cars move slowly and casual (this is a good sign) and once in awhile someone will wave (a very good sign) and sometimes no cars - (vacation is coming soon). There you now have all the facts laid out before you and you must be convinced that the evidence points to me being keenly in touch with the universe. I rest my case.

Espana~
Congrats to Espana for winning the World Cup....not a huge soccer fan but am a huge Spain fan....as Steve and I watched the finals from BJ's (he had the sliders, I had the caprese salad and brushetta) we talked about our wonderful time in Spain......I would love to go back.....Tapas in Madrid, hanging out in Barcelona, Steve on his native soil with Spain flag in Jaen; Gaudi's incredible architecture and the amazing La Sagrada.......what a wonderful place it is....
Another Check off the List: Table for Entry
Yes, I have lived in this house for over 20 years and yes it took that long to find the perfect table for my entry way - don't judge!
When we first moved in (circa 1989) it was all about the white walls, mauve carpet and pink and green couches, and antique oak furniture. Along the way we have made a few updates and change of paint colors and at present we are in the 'distressed white beach cottage' phase.
So while in Palm Springs last weekend I rooted around a few places and found this treasure. It was a bit stressful not having the measurements with me and eyeing this table but I took the plunge and happy I did. Of course I was with my sister in law in her tiny Honda and we put it in the backseat and I was contorted over, under and around the table until we got to her house and could transfer it in our truck.
When we arrived home the tension mounted and 'ta da' it fit perfectly. Of course it was painted all nice and everything so I took the sander to it and distressed it out a bit. I am oh so happy with it!

Creative Queen Bee Strikes Again
Kristen is the Creative Queen Bee - you will have to check out her blog.....ever since she was a little girl it has been all about creating things.....she would save every tag, every milk add, every this and that for a 'project'. Steve and I were always worried since her room was upstairs and full of creative treasurers it would surely cave in under the weight. However, I must say she creates beautifully in all mediums (wood, paper, oils, paint, fabric, vinyl) I am amazed at her talent. She has endless ideas and of late they involve sewing which is not one of my talents. That does not seem to stop her creative juices tho.....nor her persistence....
I have always envied those who can sit at a machine and whirl away, my MaMa Auten, my Auntie Gwen, my cousin Connie. My mom and I, on the other hand, fight it all the way, bobbins act up, tension is off, swearing begins and it does not end well, as they say. So when the Queen announced her latest idea and after my 18 hr day grueling day at work I needed a creative distraction. Since she was so active in sports as a child I never sat her down with a sewing machine and I plan to do that when I get one that does not frustrate me or her! She whipped out these Little Monsters and Tie templates and I zig-zagged away. Steve got us dinner and after some salty language and some good laughs this is the end results. Turned out pretty cute huh?
La Cage Aux Folles
I remember as a little girl my MaMa Auten had a parakeet - actually several parakeets and they were always blue. The would sing and play and she had this great old birdcage and would like the bottom with newspaper, give it fresh water, etc. My Auntie Gwen had canaries and would love to care for them and feed them pepper grass she grew in her back garden. I was always intrigued by the shape of the cage and the little attention to details - the water trays and swings/perches, little doors, etc. My sister has a few decorative birdcages and when I was shopping with my girlfriend Edie in OB at my fave store 'Vingettes' I saw this adorable bird cage. We were there for the OB Chili Cook off and they had a street fair and just browsing and enjoying the day. My impulse was to get it; however, with my Simplification Project I resisted. mind. However, the next day was an incredible challenging day at work and to escape the chaos I would daydream about how I would decorate that little bird cage. So a quick dash back to OB and Vingettes made my bitter day sweet. For the 4th it was all decked out with flags and I hung a star and firecrackers on the perch. In Palm Springs last weekend I went to another fave 'The Alley' and bought some beautiful potpourri in sage greens and whites (Jasmine) and a concrete bird to nestle in.....I am loving it and the place I found for it. I even found the perfect stand at my other fave 'Ross' and it has little metal birds in leaves on the base. Can't wait for the holidays to dress this baby up!

Rocky Road Wilson
This is Rocky.....our adorable Yorky....Rocky came to us 7 years ago as a 'Rescue Dog' found abandon in a cardboard box on a busy street with no water. He loves to go to Home Depot with Steve, 'find daddy's nose', sneeze on command, be held at all times by me, go camping (at least the first day), fly on Jet Blue to see his Grandparents in Idaho, lay on the blanket with Dylan while he watches tv and lick Brody's tasty hands. He is perfect and is a creature of habit and dare I say a bit high maintenance....but we love him anyway.
Rocky's List
Loves Routine
- Walk at 5:30 a.m. every day
- Egg white omelet with 1/4 prilosec on it (have you ever tried to cut a small prilosec in 4 pcs and then take it our of the hard coating and sprinkle it on an egg white omelet for a dog?)
- Back to bed while we shower and get ready for work
- Get carried downstairs and put on his fave blanket to sleep and bark the day away while we are off to earn his keep
- Mighty Dog Dinner at 5 (Royal Canine dry mix 1/4 cup with 1 tsp organic chicken broth and 1/4 prilosec)
- Cuddlying and spoiling for the evening
- 'Wants to go to Bed' about 7:30 p.m.
- And the bitter part of the sweet - loves to get up about 2 am for a quick look (patrol) outside and maybe a sip of water
Of course, since I have insominia that 2 am part is a kicker....either I am up and ready or just falling to sleep and groggy....or unable to go back to sleep....either way I (or Steve) have to get out of bed and take him downstairs and open the french door and wait for him (we have to close the doggy door at night due to 'the raccoon incident'). But after all that and the next morning watching him cuddle and stretch out when he has the whole bed to himself makes us smile. Thanks Rocky for the love!

4th of July
We love 4th of July....love love love everything it stands for. We have a tradition of going to the neighborhood Patriotic parade - 20+ years running.....after enjoying it with our kids, we now enjoy it with our grandkids....and since the 4th fell on Sunday this year I read (somewhere I swear!) that the parade would be on Saturday the 3rd, no problemo....make a list and get it done!
List:
Decorate house - check
Buy matching outfits for the boys - check
Make a r,w&b bandana tablecloth - check
Decorate the boys wagon - check
Buy a USA crown for beautiful daughter -check
Get son's favorite BBQ items - check
Leave early for parade for good parking - check
Uh-Oh.....Parade scheduled for Sunday, not Saturday!
Plan B List - off to Air Museum

First Entry....
....have had this 'to do' on my list for awhile and decided to go for it tonight! Oh the joy of getting to create something and better yet - mark something off of a list...it is the little things in life....which is why I think of life as bittersweet. If you try you can find the sweetness in even the most bitter of experiences and sometimes you have to look pretty darn hard, believe me....
For someone (me) that has done hand written diary journals for years, this may be a bit daunting.....maybe I don't want anyone/everyone exposed to my thoughts and opinions, mood swings ramblings (nothing worth an RX believe me) and adventures so making the disclaimer out there that I plan to offend no one!
Note to self: Keep the handwritten journal handy
